Brownies on the Broad

The Broad River begins in North Carolina then flows across the North Carolina/South Carolina border. The Broad River flows along the county borders of Cherokee and York as it makes its way toward joining with the Saluda River in Columbia to form the Congaree. The area from the border of the two states for several miles down holds a good number of small mouth bass.
Brian Garner and I canoed this section on a five hour trip. Using soft plastic crawdads, and shallow diving crank baits we caught many small mouths, bream, and large mouths. The target area in the river is the sections with rapids. The large mouths held through out the river while the small mouths held more like trout in the riffles, pools, and eddies surrounding the white water. We would anchor our canoe in river and wade through the water to fish the entire width of a stretch of rapids. When we entered a long stretch of slow moving calm water we would paddle through to the next section of fast moving water.
